Is it all about increasing the odds?

Over the weekend, I had a conversation with a chief marketing officer, and he said, "No one actually knows the result of their marketing strategy. It’s all about increasing the odds.”

At first, I took it as mere words, but then it kept playing in my head

A lot of us do marketing like maths, which has a sure formula: you post at a time, run the funnels, use that exact hook, and still get little or no guaranteed result. 

Some also research, study customer behavior, and test positioning, improve distribution, refine messaging, and even build a system, but are still not fully in control of the outcome.

Have seen two brands use the same marketing strategy and get completely different results. What actually guarantees your marketing results?
Or is it really true, it's all about increasing the odds?
